India's climate varies enormously by region — the right time to visit depends entirely on where you're going. Here's the month-by-month breakdown.

Asking "when should I visit India?" is like asking "when should I visit Europe?" — the answer depends entirely on which India you mean. Rajasthan and Ladakh are different countries when it comes to climate. This guide breaks it down month by month.

October

Rajasthan + Delhi + Agra

Post-monsoon freshness, Diwali (Oct/Nov), temperatures 20–30°C. Best month to start a Rajasthan circuit before peak prices arrive.

November

Rajasthan, Goa, Tamil Nadu

Peak begins. Pushkar Camel Fair (Rajasthan). Goa beach season opens. Ideal for a Golden Triangle itinerary — comfortable temperatures before December crowds peak.

December

Everywhere except northeast

Peak season. Maximum tourist numbers and prices. Best time for Kerala backwaters, Goa Christmas, Rann of Kutch. Cold nights in Rajasthan (pack layers).

January

Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu temples

Pongal festival (Jan 14). Republic Day parade in Delhi (Jan 26). Jaisalmer Desert Festival. Cold mornings in the north but clear skies everywhere.

February

Hampi, Goa, Rajasthan

Pre-spring sweet spot — lower prices than December/January, warm and dry across most of India. Mahashivaratri festival (Feb/March). Great for wildlife spotting.

March

Holi — nationwide

Holi (March) transforms India for 48 hours. Book months ahead for Mathura and Vrindavan (the epicentre), or Jaipur's elephant festival. Temperatures rising in the north.

April

Hills: Himachal, Uttarakhand

Too hot for the plains (35–45°C). Head to Himachal Pradesh hill stations — Kasauri, Manali accessible. Cherry blossom season in Kashmir begins.

May

Darjeeling, Sikkim, Kashmir

Kashmir valley at its most beautiful — tulip garden in bloom. Darjeeling in spring mist. Avoid the plains entirely — peak heat.

June–July

Spiti, Ladakh, Kerala (monsoon)

Ladakh and Spiti mountain roads open June. Kerala's monsoon is actually a draw — Ayurvedic retreats, lush tea estates, hotel prices 40% lower. Avoid most other regions.

August

Goa, Kerala, northeast India

Onam (Kerala's harvest festival — August/September) is worth timing. Northeast India's Cherrapunji has extraordinary waterfalls in peak monsoon.

September

Rajasthan + Golden Triangle

Monsoon ends mid-September. Early birds get post-rain greenery and 20–30% lower hotel prices before October peak. Ganesh Chaturthi in Mumbai (August/September).
